TASC 2024.01 Gap Momentum System█ OVERVIEW
TASC's January 2024 edition of Traders' Tips features an article titled “Gap Momentum” by Perry J. Kaufman. The article discusses how a trader might create a momentum strategy based on opening gap data. This script implements the Gap Momentum system presented therein.
█ CONCEPTS
In the article, Perry J. Kaufman introduces Gap Momentum as a cumulative series constructed in the same way as On-Balance Volume (OBV) , but using gap openings (today’s open minus yesterday’s close).
To smoothen the resulting time series (i.e., obtain the " signal line "), the author applies a simple moving average . Subsequently, he proposes the following two trading rules for a long-only trading system:
• Enter a long position when the signal line is moving higher.
• Exit when the signal line is moving lower.
█ CALCULATIONS
The calculation of Gap Momentum involves the following steps:
1. Calculate the ratio of the sum of positive gaps over the past N days to the sum of negative gaps (absolute values) over the same time period.
2. Add the resulting gap ratio to the cumulative time series. This time series is the Gap Momentum.
3. Keep moving forward, as in an N-day moving average.
Multi-Asset Performance [Spaghetti] - By LeviathanThis indicator visualizes the cumulative percentage changes or returns of 30 symbols over a given period and offers a unique set of tools and data analytics for deeper insight into the performance of different assets.
Multi Asset Performance indicator (also called “Spaghetti”) makes it easy to monitor the changes in Price, Open Interest, and On Balance Volume across multiple assets simultaneously, distinguish assets that are overperforming or underperforming, observe the relative strength of different assets or currencies, use it as a tool for identifying mean reversion opportunities and even for constructing pairs trading strategies, detect "risk-on" or "risk-off" periods, evaluate statistical relationships between assets through metrics like correlation and beta, construct hedging strategies, trade rotations and much more.
Start by selecting a time period (e.g., 1 DAY) to set the interval for when data is reset. This will provide insight into how price, open interest, and on-balance volume change over your chosen period. In the settings, asset selection is fully customizable, allowing you to create three groups of up to 30 tickers each. These tickers can be displayed in a variety of styles and colors. Additional script settings offer a range of options, including smoothing values with a Simple Moving Average (SMA), highlighting the top or bottom performers, plotting the group mean, applying heatmap/gradient coloring, generating a table with calculations like beta, correlation, and RSI, creating a profile to show asset distribution around the mean, and much more.
One of the most important script tools is the screener table, which can display:
🔸 Percentage Change (Represents the return or the percentage increase or decrease in Price/OI/OBV over the current selected period)
🔸 Beta (Represents the sensitivity or responsiveness of asset's returns to the returns of a benchmark/mean. A beta of 1 means the asset moves in tandem with the market. A beta greater than 1 indicates the asset is more volatile than the market, while a beta less than 1 indicates the asset is less volatile. For example, a beta of 1.5 means the asset typically moves 150% as much as the benchmark. If the benchmark goes up 1%, the asset is expected to go up 1.5%, and vice versa.)
🔸 Correlation (Describes the strength and direction of a linear relationship between the asset and the mean. Correlation coefficients range from -1 to +1. A correlation of +1 means that two variables are perfectly positively correlated; as one goes up, the other will go up in exact proportion. A correlation of -1 means they are perfectly negatively correlated; as one goes up, the other will go down in exact proportion. A correlation of 0 means that there is no linear relationship between the variables. For example, a correlation of 0.5 between Asset A and Asset B would suggest that when Asset A moves, Asset B tends to move in the same direction, but not perfectly in tandem.)
🔸 RSI (Measures the speed and change of price movements and is used to identify overbought or oversold conditions of each asset. The RSI ranges from 0 to 100 and is typically used with a time period of 14. Generally, an RSI above 70 indicates that an asset may be overbought, while RSI below 30 signals that an asset may be oversold.)
⚙️ Settings Overview:
◽️ Period
Periodic inputs (e.g. daily, monthly, etc.) determine when the values are reset to zero and begin accumulating again until the period is over. This visualizes the net change in the data over each period. The input "Visible Range" is auto-adjustable as it starts the accumulation at the leftmost bar on your chart, displaying the net change in your chart's visible range. There's also the "Timestamp" option, which allows you to select a specific point in time from where the values are accumulated. The timestamp anchor can be dragged to a desired bar via Tradingview's interactive option. Timestamp is particularly useful when looking for outperformers/underperformers after a market-wide move. The input positioned next to the period selection determines the timeframe on which the data is based. It's best to leave it at default (Chart Timeframe) unless you want to check the higher timeframe structure of the data.
◽️ Data
The first input in this section determines the data that will be displayed. You can choose between Price, OI, and OBV. The second input lets you select which one out of the three asset groups should be displayed. The symbols in the asset group can be modified in the bottom section of the indicator settings.
◽️ Appearance
You can choose to plot the data in the form of lines, circles, areas, and columns. The colors can be selected by choosing one of the six pre-prepared color palettes.
◽️ Labeling
This input allows you to show/hide the labels and select their appearance and size. You can choose between Label (colored pointed label), Label and Line (colored pointed label with a line that connects it to the plot), or Text Label (colored text).
◽️ Smoothing
If selected, this option will smooth the values using a Simple Moving Average (SMA) with a custom length. This is used to reduce noise and improve the visibility of plotted data.
◽️ Highlight
If selected, this option will highlight the top and bottom N (custom number) plots, while shading the others. This makes the symbols with extreme values stand out from the rest.
◽️ Group Mean
This input allows you to select the data that will be considered as the group mean. You can choose between Group Average (the average value of all assets in the group) or First Ticker (the value of the ticker that is positioned first on the group's list). The mean is then used in calculations such as correlation (as the second variable) and beta (as a benchmark). You can also choose to plot the mean by clicking on the checkbox.
◽️ Profile
If selected, the script will generate a vertical volume profile-like display with 10 zones/nodes, visualizing the distribution of assets below and above the mean. This makes it easy to see how many or what percentage of assets are outperforming or underperforming the mean.
◽️ Gradient
If selected, this option will color the plots with a gradient based on the proximity of the value to the upper extreme, zero, and lower extreme.
◽️ Table
This section includes several settings for the table's appearance and the data displayed in it. The "Reference Length" input determines the number of bars back that are used for calculating correlation and beta, while "RSI Length" determines the length used for calculating the Relative Strength Index. You can choose the data that should be displayed in the table by using the checkboxes.
◽️ Asset Groups
This section allows you to modify the symbols that have been selected to be a part of the 3 asset groups. If you want to change a symbol, you can simply click on the field and type the ticker of another one. You can also show/hide a specific asset by using the checkbox next to the field.
Multiple Percentile Ranks (up to 5 sources at a time)This indicator is a visual percentile rank indicator that can display 1 to 5 sources at one time.
The options:
“Sources”
Choose the number of sources you would like to display. The minimum is 1, the maximum is 5.
“Label percent position”
The label for the current percentage of where the source candle ranks.
“Label position”
This displays the source/s you’ve selected, and the chosen bottom rank % and top rank %.
“Label text size”
Displays the text size of all labels.
“Display current % labels”
Switches the labels on/off only for the current percentage rank of each source.

Source # where # is the number of the source. Selects the source you’d like.
Ma Length is the number of previous candles to consider when calculating the moving average of the source. Note, the “MA Length” only applies to sources that have the “(MA)” at the end of their name.
Bottom % is the bottom percentage rank of the source you’ve selected. This is a filter to display the candle line graph in red once the percentage rank is equal to the percentage you’ve chosen or below.
Top % is the top percentage rank of the source you’ve selected. This is a filter to display the candle line graph in green once the percentage rank is equal to the percentage you’ve chosen or higher.
A simple example of how to use the indicator:
Select the dropdown menu for source 1 and select volume.
As the candles populate, it will look at previous candles and assign a percentage rank of where the candles are in relation to previous candles.
*Note, the way Tradingview works is it will populate the first candle the chart was active, and continue on. So, let’s say the 3rd candle was the highest volume day. This candle will show up as 100%. If the next day, the 4th candle has an even higher volume, it will show up as 100% also, the previous candles won’t “repaint” to other values and are instead set based on when they were confirmed. So, this indicator works best when there are a lot of previous candles to compare itself to.
To use the bottom % rank filter enter a percentage such as 5%. As it comes across a candle that is 5% or less compared to previous volume candles, then the line graph will shade in red.
The same can be said for the top % rank. So, if you want to see the line graph change to green when it comes across the top 99th percentile rank of volume bars, then set the top % rank to 1% and it will give you extremely high-volume bars in green instead of blue.
Relative Strength Volume ComparisonThe Relative Strength Volume Comparison is a powerful tool that can help traders identify the current trend based on volume pressure and potential reversals.
This oscillator is made of two lines and the overbought and oversold levels. Each of these two lines is a relative-strength formula that contains both the famous RSI and CCI formulas, smoothed by a Hull moving average.
The two lines are different for input. The colored line is based just on price and changes color based on the relation with the other line. The second line uses as input an average of three different popular volume indicators: The OBV, the Accumulation/Distribution, and the PVT.
Thanks to this tool, which uses 6 different formulas combined, traders can:
- Identify the current trend direction, based on the color of the area fill and the first colored line
- Identify potential reversal areas thanks to the overbought and oversold levels, customizable in the input section alongside the length and smoothing parameters.

Volume RSIThis is an indicator that shows the inflow and outflow of volume into a financial instrument. Volume is likely one of the most underrated source of data in trading unfortunately so there seems to be a lack of studies on it. The size of the candle is related to the strength of the move. The calculations for this are: cumulative sum of +volume if open < close OR -volume if open > close. This has been now transformed into an rsi style indicator to give a distinct advantage (or atleast thats the idea). The idea is that we take rsi of candles so we might as well take the rsi of volume candles. As far as I can tell it is faster/its own thing compared to regular rsi. I ave also added a smoothing option. Dont forget you can change the settings and you wont die. Thank you for your interest in this release I hope you find great piles of money with it.

Stock Market Emotion Index (SMEI)Implementation of Charlie Q. Yang's research paper “The stock market emotion index”, subtitle “A New Sentiment Measure Using Enhanced OBV and Money Flow Indicators”, (2007) where he combined “five simple emotion statistics” - Close Emotion Statistic (CES), Money Flow Statistic (MFS), Supply Demand Statistic (SDS), Relative Strength Statistic (RSS), and Psychological Level Statistic (PLS) - into one indicator.

“The index calculation is solely based on observed short term market volatility as reflected by each day’s trading volume, open, high, low, and close prices”
“The basic premise of Dow theory is that the market discounts everything, including the emotions of all traders. The fundamentals of a company do not change suddenly when its daily stock price is fluctuating as driven by human emotions that are often irrational. However, over a longer time period, a company's fundamentals do change. Again, different types of human emotions, triggered by the flow of material events, are moving the stock price trend up or down. This paper summarizes the author’s attempt in understanding primary trend extent and duration by proposing a new sentiment measure using statistical analysis of stock market human emotion.”
Even though “indicator is intended for identifying primary trend cycles that typically last one year or longer“ where Mr. Yang used a fixed averaging length of 260 days and only days as time frame, my implementation has been changed slightly to accommodate for all time frames and to adapt faster using shorter averaging (timeframe dependent).
How to use it:
Positive values indicating a bullish trend and negative values indicating a bearish trend. Background color is set to green or red accordingly.
Positive and negative bar to bar changes are indicated with green and red to show bar to bar (ultra short term) trends.

Volume Buoyancy [LucF]█ OVERVIEW
This indicator uses simple analysis of past volume to determine how well it supports recent market activity. What I call Volume buoyancy measures the strength and direction of that support.
█ CONCEPTS
Buoyancy
In physics, buoyancy is the force described in Archemedes' principle :
Any object, wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.
I use the term loosely in this indicator's context, as "Volume buoyancy" here can be directed either up or down, indicating that past volume displays a bullish or bearish bias.
The calculation of buoyancy begins from a target quantity of volume summed over n bars. We then search chart bars backward, adding the volume of up and down bars in two different slots until each slot reaches the target. We then calculate two average distances: one each for the up and down bars whose volume was summed to reach the target. These average distances are then subtracted and the difference is divided by the farthest distance we had to go to find the target in either up or down bars. The last part of the calculations looks like this:
(avgDistanceDn - avgDistanceUp) / barsAnalyzed
When the average distance of down bars is greater than that of up bars, buoyancy will be positive, indicating that past activity favors the upside and vice versa. The force's strength, which in the case of actual buoyancy is the weight of the displaced fluid, in our case is measured by the size of the gap between the average distance of up vs down bars in relation to the farthest distance we had to go in the past. Buoyancy is always between +1 and -1, with values higher/lower than 0.3/-0.3 typically being unsustainable.
█ HOW TO USE THE INDICATOR
Load the indicator on an active chart (see here if you don't know how).
The default configuration displays:
• Buoyancy as a monochrome gray line.
• A channel between buoyancy and its MA, colored in one of four colors. The MA is not plotted by default, but you can see where it is with the channel.
The default settings use an Arnaud Legoux moving average over 20 bars.
• A fill between the MA and the centerline, which can be one of two colors.
• A high level at 0.30, a low level at -0.30 and the centerline at zero.
The default target is the sum of volume in the last 20 bars.
█ FEATURES
The indicator's settings allow you to define:
• A higher timeframe you want the calculations to be made on. Note that you should then ensure your chart's timeframe is always lower than the higher timeframe you specified,
as calculating on a timeframe lower than the chart's does not make much sense because the indicator is then displaying only the value of the last intrabar in the chart bar.
• The number of bars for which to add volume to obtain the target value that will be searched for in past up and down bars.
• The display of the buoyancy and MA lines, the channel between them and the fill between the MA line and the centerline.
• The type and length of the MA.
Using the "Style" tab of the indicator's settings, you can change the type and width of the lines, and the level values.
█ INTERPRETATION
Buoyancy shares the properties and shortcomings of many oscillators:
• It tends to be noisy, which is why the MA line can be helpful.
• The safest way to use it may be as a rough sentiment indicator, i.e., by paying more attention to its bull/bear state above/below the centerline.
• The more intrepid traders will want to use the channel between the main line and the MA, as it will provide earlier information than main line crosses of the centerline.
Decreasing the number of bars for which the source is added to calculate the target value will increase the noise level, somewhat like decreasing an MA's length would, but keep in mind that the number of bars is not the length of an MA.
█ LIMITATIONS
Under some circumstances, the indicator will display zero values because it cannot find the target in past bars. This will happen at the beginning of the dataset when not enough past bars have elapsed, or in the rarer cases anywhere in the dataset, when the target cannot be found in the `MAX_BARS_BACK` number of bars defined in the first line of the indicator's code (the default is 1000).
The calculations use a very primitive interpretation of volume similar to that of OBV , where all the volume of a bar is attributed to either the up or down slot. The indicator nonetheless produces results I think can be useful because we are not so much calculating precise buying/selling pressure as trying to build a big picture of where past activity over many bars appears to be taking price.
Volume data is notoriously high-variance; large values that come into or exit the calculations' scope can produce sudden variations in results, somewhat like the drop-off effect in moving averages.
█ NOTES
• The script can be used with any chart timeframe, including seconds.
• Historical values will always produce the same results. In real time, values will change until the bar closes.
